The biography, with all its ups and downs, of the exceptional artist

Elisabeth Wellano alias Liesl Karlstadt (1892–1960) came from a poor family. Her capacity for joking and her magnificent talents for acting soon brought her popularity and highly acclaimed stage appearances. Behind the glitter and glamour of her life in the public eye was her private nightmare: the painful disregard by her ever-present stage partner Karl Valentin was coupled with her emotional dependence on him. It was not until the early 1940s that she found the strength to stand alone on her own two feet and make a new artistic beginning.

With great competence and sensitivity Gunna Wendt has told the story of the tempestuous life of this exceptional artist.

"The best book that has ever been written about Liesl Karlstadt. Knowledgeable, precise and extremely sensitive."

Berliner Morgenpost (15.05.2019)
