Sophie, a young woman from the GDR, is torn between two men: one of them is experienced and a fair bit older, and from the East; the other is young and crazy and from the West. An odyssey of love ensues: Sophie goes back to the East, and when Hermann returns from Jakarta he follows her, aflame with passion. But their couple's life behind the Wall is full of hardship, and they are torn apart yet again. Although they already have a small daughter, he leaves Sophie and marries a woman in the West.
