Gregor Weber - Asphalt Soul

Tough, authentic, direct – this book hits you right in the middle of your face

Ruben Rubeck is finished. He drinks like a fish, smokes like a chimney and lives alone in digs in an old building near Frankfurt Central. He drags himself through his working day with a considerable lack of interest. He is a pro but doesn't have the instinct of a hunter. Not anymore. Rubeck used to be a plain-clothes policeman, a pavement pounder. But his physical fitness has suffered from too much alcohol and nicotine, and anyway privately he feels too much at home in the world of pimps and prostitutes. Before he joined the police force he spent eight years in the army. He's not too keen to talk about that.

The toughness of life catches up with Rubeck one evening when he is involved in a mugging. Shortly afterwards, a couple of men are lying on the pavement, one of them dead, one injured. It seems the dead man was the bodyguard of a Kosovar crime boss, and it is not long before Rubeck can no longer trust anyone – least of all anyone from his own ranks …
