The portrait of an epoch and a brilliant sketch of a clique of young would-be dandies
When Hanns-Josef Ortheil's yuppie novel Agents was published in 1989, it was celebrated as a precise and vivid portrait of the 80s. With the decline of political circles and alternative movements, it was now all about money, career and consumption, and this in turn meant the cultivation of ego worlds. Coolly, disrespectfully and precisely, Ortheil's first-person narrator, the young journalist Meynard, dissects the psychodramas of the new epoch. He looks at dynamic young entrepreneurs, restless social climbers and clever sleuths of change. "Agents" is what he calls them, the new show-offs in whose heated surroundings it is a matter of seeing through others and not allowing yourself be provoked.
A cult novel that even today is still as up to date and stimulating as ever.
