Walter Kempowski, Dirk Hempel (Editor) - Let's Hope It'll All Work Out!

A top-class literary event that fills a gap in Walter Kempowski's works

After his release from the infamous Bautzen prison in March 1956, there began for Walter Kempowski a tough struggle for a normal existence in the West. Final school exams and then university to study education, teaching in a village school, starting a family – those were the various stations. Shortly before his death, Walter Kempowski asked his longstanding associate, Dirk Hempel, to edit and publish what he called his "Foundation Diary". Kempowski’s notebooks from this period document not only the spiritual mood of the young German Federal Republic but also his own path and development to becoming a writer.

This work containing hitherto unpublished material and countless photographs from the family album complement Walter Kempowski's four already published diaries.

"From his very first book, his experiences in the Bautzen Prison, written in 1969, Walter Kempowski has struggled against the fading memory of the Nazi period and its consequences for divided and then reunited Germany. Now he has created a large-format book of memories that is incomparable in German-language post-war literature."
