Franz Hohler - THE GATEAU

He has paid for the coffee and is now standing in front of a restaurant on the top of the pass. But instead of getting into his car and driving off to his next appointment, he sets off on foot for the monument that lies further up. A short walk will do him good. Set off with a spring in his step he may – but he will never find his way back to his everyday life.

An equally sudden shift affects another man, almost 100 years old, when he hears that a bomb has been found in Lake Maggiore. He’s forced to recollect the time he spent with the Communists as a young man, for this bomb is undoubtedly linked to the group of people with whom he planned to blow up the European Foreign Ministers at their Locarno summit in the 1920s – though the plan never came to fruition. But it’s not just shock that the family has to deal with when they discover a woman of Asiatic appearance in their laundry room, who doesn’t say a single word. Their friend the parapsychologist is at a loss, and the husband, too, seeks his salvation in vain in philosophy: ‘Speaking about an event is a certain impossible possibility’ he reads, shaking his head; and when he thinks about the stranger, he feels like the other characters in Hohler’s stories, all of which are written with such a stunning delight in narration. He has a strange experience in which an unknown world threatens to take over from the effete world of rationality – an unknown world that can suck you in with all its dangerous attractiveness.
