Marcel Reich-Ranicki, Thomas Anz (Editor) - My German Literature Since 1945

Literary history for everyone: Reich-Ranicki’s finest, wisest and keenest essays on German literature since 1945

For half a century, Marcel Reich-Ranicki was the most successful, influential and hence also the most controversial literature critic. He left his mark on the literary life of post-war Germany and right into the 21st century as no others – as a critic in the Group 47, in the arts sections of influential newspapers and, with increasing popularity, on television with his legendary Literary Quartet. After his history of German literature since the Middle Ages, published in 2014, this volume is devoted entirely to the period that for both him and his audience is the present day, namely German literature since 1945.

This book edited by Thomas Anz is a unique selection of Reich-Ranicki's most important and best publications on present-day literature, his discoveries and provocations, laudations and scathing comments, contributions to debates and retrospective stocktaking. This volume thus gives a picture of literature since 1945 that could hardly be clearer and more vivid. And it tells us something else: literary life in Germany would have been much poorer during the past decades without Marcel Reich-Ranicki, – and considerably more boring.
