Hans Sahl is one of the big writers of German emigration, highly esteemed by colleagues such as Wolfgang Koeppen, Wolf Biermann and Fritz J. Raddatz. Among his best-known works are his two autobiographical books "Memoirs of a Moralist" (1983) and "Exile in Exile" (1990), in which he tells us of his sheltered childhood in Dresden and of the 1920s in Berlin; of his rise to become a famous film critic; his friendship with Bert Brecht, Ivan Goll and Ernst Toller; of his flight from the Nazis in 1933; and of the long years in exile.
