These early memoirs of the great German journalist are the most significant find in Haffner's literary estate, and are now being published for the first time.
They tell the story of a boy for whom the beginning of the First World War means the interruption of his glorious school holidays. He sees the galloping inflation of 1923 as a manifestation of a world gone mad. Ten years later, Haffner goes into exile out of disgust with the Nazis, though he himself was being neither politically nor racially persecuted.
In rational, unpretentious prose, subtly ironic and with an occasional sudden flare of anger, he looks back at the years between 1914 and 1933, showing how the politics mirrored the lives of the people and exploring the reasons for his personal development and for that of his fellow Germans.
Haffner's name stands for democratic, incorruptible liberal-mindedness, for an unpretentious but extremely elegant and artistic literary style.
