Johannes Bobrowski - Collected Poems

"He creates language images such as I have never read elsewhere." Herta Müller

When in February 1961 Johannes Bobrowski's first volume of poetry, Sarmatian Time, was published, he had only a few years to live. Yet this brief period before his death in 1965 was enough for him to establish himself as one of the most suggestive and imagery-powerful poets in post-war Germany. Although he lived in East Germany, his texts were highly acclaimed in West Germany as well. People saw in them a new way of reacting to the world; his subjects and language gestures have variously been echoed in the poems and prose of other authors. His works are available worldwide and have been translated into almost all European languages.

To mark the writer's 100th birthday, DVA is publishing Johannes Bobrowski's poems in one volume, including an epilogue by the award-winning literature critic Helmut Böttiger.

"If you want to immerse yourself in the linguistic sparkle [of Bobrowski's verses], the primeval power of his images and the sovereign elegance of his style, then this is the book for you."
