Sherko Fatah - A White Land

The journey of a young Arab through a world losing its innocence

Baghdad in the 1930s. The young Arab Anwar understands nothing of the political upheavals of the time. He dreams of beautiful houses, of distant travels and perhaps, too, a little of his Jewish friend's sister. He dreams of becoming "somebody". But then, with the outbreak of World War II, he falls under the influence of the "Black Shirts", the fascist youth organisation in Iraq.

In the entourage of the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, an ally of the National Socialists in Germany, he flees to Berlin in 1941. It is a ghostly exile awaiting him, and instead of finding good fortune he gets lost in the maze of history and the wheels of war. Anwar's path takes him to the Muslim organisation of the Waffen-SS, to Belarus, and ends with the crushing of the Warsaw Uprising. Anwar will survive, will return to his home country, but his dreams will all have been cruelly destroyed.

A bitterly true tale, an adventure story in the middle of the catastrophe in the first half of the 20th century.

“Sherko Fatah is a stroke of luck for German literature. In an impressively literary way and from the perspective of our own cultural understanding, he makes it unequivocally clear that the story he so very adeptly tells is our story as well today.”
