Peter Richter, a native of Dresden, has for many years been the cultural affairs correspondent in New York for the Süddeutsche Zeitung, and from this vantage point he takes a look back at the city and country he grew up in – at Dresden and Germany. The image presented by his native city seems to be ambiguous: its face alternates between what is architecturally and scenically attractive, beautiful and much loved on the one hand and the politically ugly and repulsive grimace it displays with the racist Pegida movement.
