Georg Pieper - Our New Anxieties

The new anxieties of Germans – their causes, their effects and how to overcome them

In his daily work, the well-known trauma psychologist and expert for crisis intervention Georg Pieper is regularly faced with a growing feeling in Germany of insecurity – anxieties that have become ingrained in people's minds. Studies have shown that the number of people claiming to be anxious is the highest for 25 years. Even before the terror attacks in Paris and Nice, Munich and Berlin, 73 percent of those interviewed admitted to being "very frightened" of terrorist violence – an increase of 21 percent compared to 2015.

Pieper analyses these new anxieties, their causes and their effects. He demonstrates what happens in a society that is governed by anxiety. Above all, he explains ways of counteracting and overcoming these fears and suggests strategies to help us build up inner strength to ward them off. Finally, but no less important, he points out that we as individuals and as members of society as a whole – and he urges us to include children in this process – have to learn to address the issues of anxiety and feelings of insecurity and accept them as part of our reality.
