Marie Gamillscheg - All That Shines

All about a small community joined together by fate in the shadow of a high mountain

Marie Gamillscheg takes her readers with her into a world that is gradually disappearing. Many-voiced and subtle – her debut novel tells of a small community joined together by fate in the shadow of a high mountain and of the shine of both downfall and a new beginning.

There is something going on deep down in the shafts and tunnels of the mine – and everyone in the village can feel it. "Espresso" landlady Susa, for example, when at night she unscrews the pumps from the ketchup tubs. Or old Wenisch, her last regular. Even the mayor can feel it when he happens not to be away at a health resort. But the very first person to feel it was taciturn Martin on that morning when he lost control of his car. It was as if the mountain was trembling, as if it was about to collapse. As far as young Teresa and newcomer Merih are concerned, it is a clear-cut case: she wants to get away at last from the ramshackle place, while he is looking for a new beginning – here of all places.

"Gamillscheg is a specialist in the human factor, the persuasiveness of details, in discords of dreams of the future, and the truth of the body."
