Walter Schels

Beate Lakotta was born in 1965 and is an editor of the science section of Spiegel news magazine.
The photographer
The photographer Walter Schels, born in 1936, made a name for himself with his character studies of people and animals. Their joint feature article, Life Before Death, published in Der Spiegel in 2003, won them the distinguished Hansel-Mieth Prize; in addition, Walter Schels was awarded the second prize at the World Press Photo 2004 contest.
