Johannes Bobrowski

Johannes Bobrowski was born in Tilsit on April 9, 1917. After his return from Soviet imprisonment in 1949, he settled in East Berlin, where he worked as an editor in publishing. 1961 saw the publication of his first volume of poems, Sarmatian Time, which, like his other books, appeared simultaneously in both East and West Germany. He was awarded the prestigious literary prize of the Group 47 and, in 1965, the Heinrich Mann Prize for his novel Levin's Mill. Johannes Bobrowski died in East Berlin in 1965. His texts have been translated into 65 languages.
