Ulrich Ritzel - Woods on the Shore

"Unerringly put together, precisely observed, linguistically brilliant." Deutsche Welle

Charlotte Gossler, born in 1936, is found dead, almost mummified. A letter sent by anxious neighbours to the house management saying that the woman hadn't been seen for a long time had obviously been mislaid for several months. Nevertheless, it initially seems like a routine case, albeit a sad one. The coroner says the old lady's demise was from natural causes, foul play could be ruled out. Then, however, while searching through the apartment, Inspector Markus Kuttler comes across a diary with some revealing and partly disturbing notes. They were made by the dead woman's son, a certain Tilman Gossler – he had kept the diary until shortly before his death in an accident seven years previously. His death has still not been cleared up…

“His novels go beyond the genre.”
