Angelika Overath - Poesias

33 Romanic poems and their German approximations

In the beginning was poetry, as the poets say, and so as children we first learn language through sounds and tones in play.

This is precisely the approach Angelika Overath used with the Rhaeto-Romanic language. The material she used was old dictionaries, modern online lexica, collections of idioms and proverbs. Her aim: to coax the innate sense from the foreign language through its sound and this way to create by means of writing a Romanic identity.

33 Romanic poems are the result, Poesias, each one accompanied by its German approximation. A double game begins, the flirt of two languages, for the German reacts to the Romanic impulse with amazing variations, echoes and fakes.
