Walter Kempowski - Idyllic World

A novel packed with humour and ambiguity

A little village in the moors in the 1960s. Matthias Jänicke, a teacher and not as young as he used to be, starts his first teaching job. Idyllic impressions make him believe in an idyllic world, at least for a while. But appearances can be deceptive and before long he realises that almost all the villagers have something to hide.

Walter Kempowski has successfully conjured up the atmosphere of a past age. Myriad precisely observed details have been put together to create a pin-sharp picture of a seemingly protected and old-fashioned world, the sell-out of which, however, by modern times has already begun.
