About the power of affection and humanity

14-year-old Basil has lost his parents and is fleeing. There are 7,000 kilometres separating the Iraqi boy with Palestinian roots from his destination: Europe. His flight is arduous and takes him through many different countries: Turkey, Greece, Italy and finally to Germany. He faces indifference and rejection, but also finds help and support. And he gets to know Abal, a refugee girl who is also fleeing.

They meet locked on the car deck of the Patras-Ancona ferry and arrive hungry and half dying of thirst in Italy. But unfortunately the ferry staff and guards try to catch them after they had been revealed by passengers. In panic the children make off and Basil runs over the cars, leaves Abal behind him and makes it to the Italian mainland.

Here he is apprehended by a couple of policemen. Basil is terrified. They are sure to get him deported. But the officers tell him to make for the station and get on a train – for Rome. And then to travel to Germany or Sweden!

•Highly topical: refugees in Europe

•An excellently researched and sensitively narrated novel

"No one picking this book up can remain unmoved by it." FRANKFURTER RUNDSCHAU
