The new hysteria:
why increasingly more societies
are sealing themselves off

"Build that wall": Trump's followers probably chant nothing more passionately than this. And it is not only in the USA that the call to close borders is becoming ever louder. Less than 30 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall new walls, high-security fences and border walls are being erected.

The correspondents from travelled along the walls separating countries. They visited construction sites and spoke to one-time neighbours who now have to detour for kilometres. All over the world they met architects, entrepreneurs and politicians; border guards, people smugglers and refugees; losers and profiteers. It is becoming apparent that walls are fear cast in concrete and that at the same time they entrench inequality: the rich protect themselves from the poor, winners from losers, those governing from those being governed. While all this is going on the wall building boom distracts from the fact that the real problems of the human race know no borders: neither climate change nor terrorism are kept out by walls, and the same applies to hunger and epidemics.
