Shabnam Arzt, Wolfgang Arzt - Hug and Let Go

What a little girl can teach us about life

When she was eight months pregnant, Shabnam Arzt and her husband Wolfgang were told that their child probably had a serious chromosome defect. The doctors urgently advise an abortion, but Shabnam and Wolfgang decide in favour of their daughter. Jaël is born with trisomy 18, or Edwards syndrome, and the doctors give her only a few hours to live, then days, weeks.

But Jaël lives until she is 13 and with her infectious joie de vivre, exuberant love and grateful attitude to life leaves her mark on all who get to know her. With candour, warmth and huge optimism her parents describe what it means to love a child – and to lose it.

Their story is an encouragement to believe in the value of life and to face difficult situations with optimism and humour. Above all, it shows what a big example a little girl can be.
