Liberating us to allow us to act ethically

If you think ethically, in other words if you ask what is right and what is wrong, you usually also think of guilt. If you act wrongly you make yourself guilty or, from a theological point of view, you commit a sin, intentionally estranging yourself from God. But how much intention is there in sin and guilt? Do we lie because we want to, or do we lie because we are ashamed of the truth? Do we kill from cold calculation or do we kill because we will only be able to keep up appearances if the enemy is dead?

In this fundamentally new approach to Protestant ethics, Klaas Huizing has raised human emotions to the level of guiding categories. In nine essays, he describes how powerful shame and honour can be in making us do something or preventing us from doing something. Finally, in the Biblical teachings and in Jesus' manner, he discovers pedagogical motives of shame and at the same time potently powerful practices that liberate us to allow us to act ethically.
