Kerstin Held - The Heroic Mama Held

"I carry my children in my heart!"

Her own childhood was not a happy one. And yet Kerstin Held succeeds like few others have in making children happy who would otherwise have no chance. She now provides handicapped foster children a family home – often in spite of many obstacles.

Kerstin Held was 25 years old when she took in a handicapped foster child for the first time, a situation for which in the year 2000 there was no legal regulation. Her taking in foster son Sascha became a precedent in Germany and would become the impulse for the creation of the provisional regulation that is still in force today. Kerstin Held became a tireless fighter for inclusion and equality for disabled foster children while struggling with excessive bureaucracy, an unclear legal situation, and many prejudices. To date, Kerstin Held has taken in twelve children as foster children, ten of them severely disabled.

She tells here of her rocky path to becoming a 'Mama Held' [her family name Held means 'hero' in German] and then the current chairman of the German Association of Disabled Foster Children. Kerstin Held is still working towards providing disabled foster children with greater advocacy.

• The powerful voice for the rights of children with disabilities

• Inclusion as an important social issue

• A compelling plea for complete abstinence from alcohol during pregnancy
