Ulrich Trebbin - Last Journey to Königsberg

A literary journey to a lost homeland

Königsberg – for Ella the name means the gulls over the fish market, the ornamental arch above her father's wine-selling business. And it also means those carefree days on the coast of the Samland. But early in 1945, shortly before the end of the war, the once so fashionable East Prussian metropolis has been reduced to rubble. And Ella, who with her children has escaped to her sister's in Potsdam, risks the impossible: while Russian troops are advancing on the city she gets on a train for Königsberg one last time, for the world she grew up in and her first love, a doomed world.

The sensitively written and moving tale told by Ulrich Trebbin is about a chapter from the history of his own family, behind which there lies hidden a deeply human experience – that of losing his homeland.

For all readers of Dörte Hansen's Altes Land.
