Reiner Engelmann - The Bookkeeper of Auschwitz

Oskar Gröning's belated realisation: "Auschwitz is a place I should never have been involved in"

Oskar Gröning is 21 years old when the convinced SS man is commandered to Auschwitz. His job entailes administering the valuables of the prisoners. Although Gröning knows that the people are being murdered he apologises for his work by saying that he was not directly involved in the killing. In the last big Auschwitz case, Oskar Gröning was sentenced for complicity to the murder of 300,000 Jews. Using the information from interviews and court minutes, Reiner Engelmann has written down the stations in the life of this man – an important contribution about a youth led astray, unanswered questions of conscience and a life with guilt.

• Living with guilt: SS man Oskar Gröning

• The first young-adult book focussing on the life of a perpetrator
